This is a relaxing, gentle massage performed by one of our lymphatic drainage therapists, who aim to stimulate the lymphatic system by using a light, rhythmic technique, where the accumulation of lymph is causing swelling, congestion, and pain. Lymphatic drainage is designed to help conditions where such swelling may have occurred following medical treatments or illness which has caused the lymphatic system to block. By gently manipulating specific areas of your body, your especially trained lymphatic drainage masseuse works to encourage lymph to move to an area with freely functioning lymph vessels.
Lymphatic drainage at Manchester Massage can help
This technique has been used for many years to accelerate the healing of injuries sustained by athletes and during the post-surgical recovery period; professional athletes in particular have used this massage treatment to speed-up their recovery process. But in general terms, this is a massage that can be used to alleviate a number of conditions such as the appearance of cellulite on the thighs, water retention and the puffiness it causes around the eyes, arms and legs. It is also recognised as a relief for sinus problems, migraines, and some digestive disorders.
Other conditions that benefit from lymphatic drainage massage
A lymphatic drainage massage is often used to relieve lymphedema following breast cancer surgery. Sufferers from rheumatoid arthritis which causes joint pain, swelling and stiffness and fibromyalgia with chronic muscle and joint pain, also find it benefits them. When excess fat accumulates in the lower half of the body and sometimes the arms, it can block the lymphatic pathways, this is known as lipoedema, a lymphatic drainage massage from one of our skilled therapists can help relieve this as it helps encourage the flow of fluid through the body.
How lymphatic drainage works
Your Manchester Massage therapist will use gentle and carefully directed strokes, usually towards the lymph nodes, the small organs that help filter the lymphatic fluid. As the lymph vessels are immediately beneath the skin, this light technique encourages drainage, whereas a more robust pressure can cause the lymph to stagnate. Whilst lymph nodes are located throughout the body, the largest clusters can be found in the neck, armpits, groin, and knees. At this Manchester massage centre we have masseuses who have been specifically trained in the treatment.
Please Note:
Generally speaking, lymphatic drainage massage is a safe treatment, but some conditions where lymphatic drainage massage isn’t recommended include:
Heart condition.
Kidney failure.
Blood clots.
A current infection.
If you are seeking this massage therapy and you are in any doubt it is always best to consult your medical practitioner.
