A massage can be relaxing, especially if you’re suffering with pregnancy-related physical and emotional challenges, but there are a few things to be mindful of and it is always best to be cautious when you are expecting a child. Recent research has indicated that for the healthy woman a pregnancy massage can be most beneficial, but the client should always book a qualified pregnancy therapist and make them fully aware of how many weeks pregnant they are and any allergies. Some research has shown that essential oils are best avoided, so we use a pure baby oil.

Having any massage helps raise your endorphin, oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine levels, these affect your levels of wellbeing and generally make you feel happy, whilst at the same time a massage can also reduce levels of cortisol, the hormone related to stress levels. Dependent on the stage of your pregnancy you may feel that sitting up, lying on your side or a semi-reclining position are good options. You could find that the second trimester seems like the best time for you when pregnancy sickness has passed, but you are also starting to feel the strain on your body of pregnancy-related aches or muscle tension, so this could be the perfect time for spoiling yourself. Ask your therapist if you need extra towels or pre-natal pillows to support your bump and make yourself comfortable.
